I cannot really call myself a “dog” person. I know. For a lot of ya’ll that pretty much makes me inhuman.
However, with two small ones and a very large yard, for the first time last summer I found myself thinking that a dog might be nice to have around for protection, extra alertness of the surrounding area, and for my little ones’ pleasure.
Skeptical, my husband and I started looking at the humane society and online at breeders, just to see. We went to visit one particular breeder, Crooked River German Shepherds and Kelly Nash, the owner, had some really beautiful and remarkable dogs. We went looking for a female puppy, and she had one left that was about 3months old.
It played with the girls and was very sweet. But I just wasn’t feeling it. We stayed for awhile and talked and played, but I just didn’t feel like that was our dog.
As we were heading out to the car, Kelly pulled out the big guns, and by guns, I mean dog. A big freakin dog!! At around 120 lbs or more… I can’t quite recall now, Dravin, one of her males, was let up from the basement to go potty.
Half bear, half wolf in appearance, with golden brown eyes peering from its all black face, this gentle giant quickly won my heart. I’d have taken him home with me right then, but it was beyond clear his loyalties lay with Kelly, refusing to stay outside when she was out of his sight.
We might not be able to have him, but we could reserve one of his next pups from another litter. So we decided to go with that.
I still have yet to get word an official litter has taken although I know he has been studded to an all black female name Ninja! Call me crazy, but Ninja just sounds like she is the perfect dog to create a perfect pupppy for our family. So we are keeping our fingers crossed for more word of our puppy-to-be.
So as the Westminster Dog Show was just a few days ago and the winner of best in show this year was a German Shepherd named Rumor, it seems like doggies will be on my brain for the foreseeable future.
